Wario Ware, Inc. Mega Microgames Full Game Review

WarioWare Mega Mico Games is a party game developed for Nintendo’s Gameboy Advance. The game features a lot of the Wario cast, including Wario, Jimmy, Mona, Kat & Ana, and many more! Each character has their own “story” mode where you play through their mini games, gradually increasing speed and difficulty as you win the mini-games.
Being that this game was developed for the Gameboy Advance, it isn’t a party game in a similar way that you’d consider Mario Party to be a party game. You don’t really play against other players unless you use a link cable to connect to other people who play the game, and when you do that you’re really only competing to see who can win mini games the longest before losing lives, but it’s still a mini-game based game where winning them beats the game for you.
The game itself is super fun. You have a wide variety of mini-games despite the controls being very limited for all of them. In these mini-games you get a lot of notable appearances with very small fragments of other games turned into these micro games. A great example of this is 9-Volt’s story where you play mini-games based off of other Nintendo games like F-Zero, The Legend of Zelda, and many more! It’s a great way to turn really simple mechanics into a two second game where you can lose for doing something wrong and the increased speed and difficulty makes them so much better.

One thing that isn’t super great in the game, is the unfortunate fact that there’s not a lot substance to the game. I’m a huge fan of the WarioWare games, I love them. But the early games were really limited on their mini-games and what they could do. The fact that this is a Gameboy Advance game, not even a Gamecube game, just really limited how much could be on this game. Don’t get me wrong, the game is great for what it is, but unfortunately it’s super short, and once you beat the game you only have the exact same mini-games you’ve already beaten to replay. It’s a tragic shortcoming of the game.
Once you’ve beaten the game you do unlock new modes like the infinite Paper Airplane mode, and Jump Rope, but they’re not a whole lot of substance either. They’re cool to have been added, but they just don’t last. Notably if you play on Nintendo Switch Online, the multiplayer games don’t even launch and work. It’s really sad, but they work in the original game which is what you’d expect.
Wario Ware, Inc. Mega Microgames Conclusion
I love the WarioWare games, I think they’re really fun but really shortlived, especially the older games like Mega Microgames. The idea of just constantly jumping into a new game one after the other and quickly having to adapt and beat them all is really fun! I enjoy the concept, and I like how these games can be played solo unlike other party games that generally force 4 players into a session.
This issue with the games not having a lot of replayability and only a limited number of games is addressed in later games, like in WarioWare Get It Together, but for the Micro Games it’s such a glaring issue. The mini-games themselves are fun, simple, and they work for a fast paced party game like this. I just wish there was more going on in the game.
