Ultimate Spider-Man Review

Ultimate Spider-Man for the Nintendo Gamecube is a fairly good beat-em-up game based in the Marvel universe. You go throughout New York City finding collectibles, saving or helping citizens in random events, practicing your movement, and going to your next story mission. It’s a fairly pleasant overworld that lets you move about freely to really enjoy the movement that the game has to offer.
To progress to the next story mission, you’ll need to complete a set number of citizen events and find a set number of collectibles as well. It sounds fairly tedious, but the numbers required for each mission is fairly low, only requiring two of each objective to progress. If you’re a completionist, this won’t be a problem, and if you just want to enjoy the story, this is only a setback of a few minutes.
To main story missions focus on Spider-Man’s various fights across New York. You encounter other antagonists like Rhyno, Venom, and a bunch of others. The story doesn’t make you repeat any character encounters with the exception of Venom since he’s a recurring character throughout the entire game.
In addition to Spider-Man’s missions, you also complete several missions as Venom. Sometimes you’re just chasing someone through the city while other missions will have you throwing Wolverine’s bike at a bar and then fighting him.
Venom’s Missions are more combat focused, while Spider-Man focuses on combat and saving other citizens that are in distress. Overall it’s a great dynamic that makes the frequently boring beat-em-up genre much better, despite the repetitive combat.
Ultimate Spider-Man Review Conclusion
I overall enjoyed Ultimate Spider-Man. If you look on places like Reddit, you’ll see people complaining about how clunky and repetitive the game is, but I’ve gotta disagree. I generally despise this genre of games and I’m not even remotely a fan of Spider-Man but the game felt great. I generally gauge my opinion on games like this by how well they move and how decent the combat is, and this game beats a lot of similar games from this era. Games like Hulk (Not Hulk Ultimate Destruction!) or really any of the Batman games on the Gamecube don’t come close by comparison.
The game is fun, it’s not too long, and it feels fairly good to play.
